Imagine The End

(This post was written by Mia Hannahs, PromiseKids Director)
On Sunday, Drew Wells, Pastor of Young Adults, spoke at our Parenting Beyond Your Capacity Group. Here is a glimpse of what he shared that night:
“Imagine a father and mother who involve their family in the church and make it their business to involve their children in that church. Sadly, that church begins showing troubling symptoms of a problem that will affect the spiritual development of their children. So, the parents uproot from a place with their friends and within their community to seek a church that they believe will impact their children’s relationship with God.
Essentially starting over, the parents finally find a small, upstart church. Sixteen years later, the parents are still active in this church; their children are grown and gone. But because these parents thought with the end in mind, two of their children pursued full-time careers in ministry and all of their children are believers.
That father and mother are Ron and Lee Wells, my parents. Because of their sacrifice and foresight I owe them my rich Christian heritage, my pastoral role and ministry, and every opportunity thereafter. Were my parents perfect? No. Were we perfect children? Not hardly. They have degrees in literature and engineering, not child psychology. They simply parented with the end in mind.
I recently asked my parents, ‘What guided you guys, what helped you formulate your plan for raising us?’ Their answer: They wanted to do anything and everything they could to help us know God and become the unique people God created us to become.”
Drew closed our meeting with these thoughts: “If you can afford to feed, cloth, educate, insure, entertain, train, and equip your children technologically, then you can afford to help them discover who God is, and who He wants them to become. Do your children know God and who He is guiding them to become?”
