Now that was worth the risk…

So to counter that last blog I wrote talking about managing risk, here is kind of a rebuttal.

Recently we celebrated my wife Christy’s birthday. And men, I’m sure you know the risks involved here… Should I get jewelry? Clothes? A new car? What if I spend too much money? What if I don’t spend enough? The pressure! Then my son Josh offered up a solution; what about getting her “five finger” shoes? Well… what if she doesn’t like those… they are kind of different. What color? What other options are there? So after reasoning with my son Josh- we decided to go for it. And she loves them! Josh is a hero!

The idea behind risk is weighing the cost. I know some of you always want all the facts to base a decision on evidence and information. But in this case it was hard to get the kind of information we needed until we made the decision. Others always use their gut, but if you make a decision when you are not sure of all the consequences with something that matters to you, your gut is going to be a little upset. I say there are times you have to go against conventional wisdom, and you have to go against fear and make a decision that you believe in. Sometimes that is worth the risk.

On a side note; it has been my observation that the more someone has invested in an idea, program, organization, etc., the less likely they are to risk things. The problem with that is things rarely stay the same, things are in constant movement. And the truth is risk is inherent in life. In fact, doing nothing is a risk too. So I say: pray, weigh the evidence, and go for it! After all life is meant to be lived!
