Set the Table Week 5 – Discussion Guide

Getting Started

Main Idea:
Set the table for a Spirit-filled legacy in your family.

Discussion Starter:
Everyone is a son or daughter, and everyone was raised by someone. Share one piece of valuable advice that you received from the person who raised you.

Introduction:
This week, Pastor Micah shared a message about the enmity that sometimes develops between parents and kids around the table. One of our Faith Promise values is “We grow together.” There is no togetherness like family togetherness. Why do we fight the most with the people we love the most?

Encounter God

Primary Scriptures: Mark 5:21-24, Mark 5:35-43

Discussion Questions:

  1. Read Mark 5:21-24. Jairus begged Jesus to lay hands on his daughter. Who are you asking to lay hands on the people you love? Do you have a mentor or spiritual parent in the faith? What about spiritual children—who are you pouring into? Is there any friction in your relationships with those you mentor or those who mentor you? How do you respond to criticism and direction?
  2. Read Mark 5:35–36. What are you “bothering” Jesus about? What prayers are you pounding on heavens door? Spend some time in prayer as a group. Pray for the relationships you discussed in question one.
  3. Read Mark 5:37-43. Jesus took a few close friends with Him to witness this miracle. Who are you inviting into your life to encourage your spiritual growth? Who are you inviting to witness what God has done in your life?

Discovery Bible Method:
For deeper study, as an alternative to the questions above, read Mark 5:25-34 and use the Discovery Bible Method to explore the passage.

Embrace Others

Suggestion: Consider breaking the group into dyads or triads for this section.

On the way to Jairus’s house, Jesus healed someone else. Take a moment to read Mark 5:25-34 together, and then pray for any healing that is needed in your dyads and triads.

Engage the World Around Us

Engaging at Faith Promise:
If you have kids, have you signed them up for SummerJam or Movement? If you don’t have kids, or if your kids are grown, could you sponsor a student and pay their fee for SummerJam or Movement?

Engaging in Community and the World:
Faith Promise is joining other churches around the country for SERVE Day, July 13, 2019. What project can you and your group join? You can even “choose your own adventure” and create your own project in the app!

Expand God’s Kingdom

Did this week’s message push some buttons and remind you of a relationship that needs restoration? Take the first step. Allow the other person to see how God is working in you and through you to mend and restore what is broken.

Leader’s Notes

ALL groups at Faith Promise should follow Jesus Christ and lead others to do the same. Below are the marks of a growing follower and disciple of Jesus.

– A follower of Jesus desires to encounter God through the deeper study and application of God’s Word.

– A follower of Jesus embraces people and values relationships on a deeper level so everyone can grow together.

– A follower of Jesus engages and serves the world around them and in their community, through local partners or God-directed opportunities.

– A follower of Jesus expands God’s Kingdom through development and multiplication of disciple-makers, possibly to lead more groups at Faith Promise.
