I Still Love this Land – Discussion Guide

Getting Started

Main Idea:
Wherever you find yourself, settle in and plant roots to live there.

Discussion Starter:

When you move to live in a different house or apartment, how long does it take you to get all the boxes unpacked?

Introduction:

God sent a message to the exiles in Babylon. He told them to settle in that place, build houses and plant gardens. They were to get married and have children, then expect their children to marry and have children. They also were to pray for Babylon and to seek its prosperity.

Encounter God

Primary Scriptures: Jeremiah 29:4-7

Discussion Questions:

  1. Read Jeremiah 29:4-7. Why do you think God used the phrase “…those I carried into exile …,” (NIV) in v. 4?
  2. God details what the people were to do to show they were settling in. How do people in our area show they are “settling in” in v. 5?
  3. How did God tell them they were there for the long haul?
  4. The exiles were instructed to seek peace and prosperity for Babylon in verse 7. Why?
  5. Read Jeremiah 29:11. How does God reassure His people here?

Discovery Bible Method:
For deeper study, as an alternative to the questions above, read Jeremiah 29:1-11  and use the Discovery Bible Method to explore the passage.

Embrace Others

Suggestion: Consider breaking the group into twos or threes for this section.

What questions do you ask people to get to know them? What questions would you rather people not ask you?

Engage the World Around Us

Engaging at Faith Promise:  How do we serve God? By serving and loving others. Faith Promise values include “We Serve Others. Who are you serving? Serve Day 2020 is July 11. Your group can do ANYTHING to serve someone in your community. Email lisac@faithpromise.org for current projects at your campus OR go to https://faithpromise.org/events/serve-day-2020 for Acts of Service, Acts of Encouragement, and Acts of Kindness ideas that your group can do.

Engaging in Community and the World: Is there a particular are of our country or the world that you are interested in or drawn to? How can you do more to feel closer to that place or closer to those people? Do you know someone from that area you can talk to? Can you do research online or at the library?

Expand God’s Kingdom

Even if you simply move across town or a few miles down the road, your neighbors are usually new to you. How do you get to know them? If a new family moves into your neighborhood, how do you welcome them?

Leader’s Notes

ALL groups at Faith Promise should follow Jesus Christ and lead others to do the same. Below are the marks of a growing follower and disciple of Jesus.

– A follower of Jesus desires to encounter God through the deeper study and application of God’s Word.

– A follower of Jesus embraces people and values relationships on a deeper level so everyone can grow together.

– A follower of Jesus engages and serves the world around them and in their community, through local partners or God-directed opportunities.

– A follower of Jesus expands God’s Kingdom through development and multiplication of disciple-makers, possibly to lead more groups at Faith Promise.
