Christmas 2020 – The Grinch – Discussion Guide

Getting Started

Main Idea: Our hope is here because God is with us.

Introduction: It can be easy to place our hope in the things of this world. However, everything in this world will disappoint us. True, everlasting hope comes from God through Jesus.

Discussion Starter: What was the last thing you anticipated with high hopes?

Encounter God

Primary Scriptures: Matthew 1:18-23, Isaiah 7:14, 1 Peter 3:8-9, 1 Peter 3:13-15

Discussion Questions:

  1. Immanuel means “God with us.” Discuss what it means to you that, in Jesus, God is with us.
  2. Read 1 Peter 3:15 Do people ask you about your faith? If so, how do you respond? If not, how can you prepare to explain it when someone does ask?
  3. Are you seen as hopeful by your neighbors and others around you?
  4. Read Romans 5:3-5 Hope is the product of a developed character, which is the product of endurance, which is the product of suffering. So hope is at the end of the process, not the beginning. How have you responded to suffering this year?

Discovery Bible Method:
For deeper study, as an alternative to the questions above, read Isaiah 7:14 and use the Discovery Bible Method to explore the passage.

Embrace Others

Suggestion: Consider breaking the group into twos or threes for this section.

How can your group use your shared interests to show others the hope of Jesus this Christmas season? Read 1 Peter 3:8-9 How can you set yourselves apart from our culture by living out the values in this Scripture?

Engage the World Around Us

Engaging at Faith Promise and in the Community: This time of year, there is no shortage of service opportunities. How can your group engage at FP and our community to serve others and show the hope we have in Jesus?

Engaging in World: Are there any global organizations that anyone in your group supports? If so, how can the rest of the group come alongside them?

Expand God’s Kingdom

1 Peter 3:8-9 is a great source for gauging your discipleship journey. Find someone to go through these verses together to work out how you can grow together and align yourselves with God’s Word.

Leader’s Notes

– A follower of Jesus embraces people and values relationships on a deeper level so everyone can grow together.

– A follower of Jesus engages and serves the world around them and in their community, through local partners or God-directed opportunities.

– A follower of Jesus expands God’s Kingdom through development and multiplication of disciple-makers, possibly to lead more groups at Faith Promise.
